These are all great suggestions.

My sleeper suggestion is the CAD TSM411, the small dynamic mic that comes with the drum mic packs. Cheap mic, sounds great. Crisper and tighter sounding than a 57, since I got these mics my 57s haven't gotten much use on snares.

The kick mic that comes in these drum packs is just so-so at best, but the TSM411 just slams.

Works great on guitar cabinets too....

Audio Technica ATM 23he.

M88 can be cool too.

4047 or 414 on the shell is cool.

I gotta get a 201. I'm gonna be drum teching on a session this weekend and the engineer just got a 201, I can't wait to hear it. I loves me some Beyerdynamic.

How often and under what circumstances does anyone find themselves micing the shell? (as demonstrated at TapeOpCon) What mic have you used?

I mic the shell a lot,

Usually an SM7 which then gets a little high shelf in mix. Sometimes an LDC like 4047. When? I guess anytime I don't need the super-pop-sound from a top mic. I like the side mic more.

Been using either a Neuman KM84 or Josephson e22S on snare for a couple years now. Big, big sound. Sometimes I throw a second Josephson under the snare if I'm not using my pair on OHs.

I've been micing the shell with omni dynamics. Shure 535 or vp64, EV 635 or 635a. Omni lets you get the mic as close as possible with no bass bump..

I like to throw a 4050 in there from the front (in figure-8) and angle it so I get the side of the snare and the beater side of the kick.

Careful for phase though. I use it all the time. It just adds...what it needs to.

i've been micing the shell almost always for years now. to me it sounds a lot more like a snare than the top mic does. usually an AT4040 as close as i can get it...sometimes a ksm141 either in cardioid or omni....occasionally the m160 back 4-6" or so.

+1 and I like using the pro37r on bottom snare.

sm81 owns the sm57 for snare.

I love sm81 on snare, but I rarely mic anything but overheads closely with 219s and the kick with the sm81.

Lately if I mic the shell its in addition to micing the head. I mix them to one track.

Whenever you want a bit more "crack!" and a little less "pop"!.

I dunno, so many things can work.... an sm7, an i5, a 160, a 4047, a 414... anything but a bright sdc in my opinion. I'd avoid a km184 or an nt3 or an ma100, but that's just my taste.

I've been shell mic-ing with a akg d880 which I just found out has been discontinued. It's like a great and different sounding 58.
