I shot out all the suitable mics i have on snare for a session recently.
I tried 414,421,441,Re20,n/d408/308,sm7,m201,sm57
I liked the 57 then the Re20 then the 414.
Up until then I was favouring a 421 most of the time.
It's given me a new found respect for the sm57.
I used Re20's on toms - painful to get positioned but they sounded fantastic.

Here's an alternate flavor: ADK TC -- their cheaper tube LDC.
I'm not saying it's the mic for yer normal cracking snare sound. But it can make a wood snare sound real fat and round in a small room -- think "Heart of Gold"-era Neil Young. Hit the drum lightly in the middle, no rim shot, and this big bosomy noise goes right to tape.

How are you guys micing the snare shell? I got a very dull dound when I tried it so maybe I did soemthing wrong. Anybody got a picture of the proper way to mice a snare shell and what style mics are best for this (condensor, dynamic, omni, cardiod, etc)?
Thanks!
Thanks!

I dunno, so many things can work.... an sm7, an i5, a 160, a 4047, a 414... anything but a bright sdc in my opinion. I'd avoid a km184 or an nt3 or an ma100, but that's just my taste.

We have a pool... and a pond. Pond's good for you though.
I use a dynamic cardioid and put it as close to the shell as I can get it without touching. I like to place it midway between 2 lugs, and in a way that minimizes the hat leakage. I would like to find a used ev635 or similar omni, to see what difference no proximity effect makes, it seems like a popular choice.Derrick wrote:How are you guys micing the snare shell? Hmmm... I will have to try this again. A dynamic cardioid like a 57? Is this mid way between the top/bottom rims as well as between two lugs? Inother words, right directly in the center of the shell both with respect to the lugs and the rims?JASIII wrote:I use a dynamic cardioid and put it as close to the shell as I can get it without touching.
