New Snare Mics

Post by TV Lenny » Wed Nov 14, 2007 11:08 am

I'm looking for some new mics to use on snare tops and bottoms other than a 57. I did a quick search but not exhaustive so if someone posted this question before I apologize.

57 usually sounds decent to me. I also have come to like using a Stedman N90 on the bottom. What are some other options I should consider? Ultimately, I want 4 or 5 very solid mic choices to work with.

Thanks,
Tom

I just got one of these, and I really like it. Alot less bleed than the I5 I had been using, and sounds better than a 57 to me.

Audix I5, SM7b, and KSM141 are my usual snare mics. CAD M179 sometimes underneath.

I5 is like the less honkish 57 with a bright top. SM7b is sounds big but not overly hyped anywhere. 141 is also fairly natural sounding but a little upper-mid/early-high presence gives it an up-front sort of character.

sennheiser 441. kills on snares. always my first choice. find a used one.

ksm141 is good too. or maybe grab one of those TAB-Funkenwerk transformers for your 57. they're only $75.

I've been using a CAD M177 on bottom snare with good results. I usually have a i5 or SM57 on the snare because my SM7 is usually on the kick drum. I'd love to have a MD441, but can't justify buying it right now.

Seriously consider the M177, I got one for $60 from musicians friend. They also sound good on toms if you like condensers there.

The best mic purchase for me in quite some time. You need one. Or two. Or three like me! :)

I've decided that I'm, going to stop telling everyone how awesome the m201 can be, so I can keep the world's supply for myself.

I usually find myself using the m201 or the i5 as a top mic when I'm after the sound of a dynamic... which is most of the time.

Lots of things can be great on snare. Some condensers too, aimed at the shell or the top depending on what you're going for. 414, c37a, 451 or km84 taped to a 57 or i5.

That was our standard bottom snare mic, dude.

To be honest, I've never used a 441 on top snare... how weird is that? I've never tried a 421 on snare either. As a matter of fact, I've never heard of anyone using one on top snare. Oh well, now I've got something to try out. You don't hear about people talking about 421's on kick these days, but they still rule on kick. Then again, people used to talk about the 421 on kick...

...but I digress.

Don't buy an m201. You'll just end up liking it immensely.

Also, if you're already using a mic that's proven to be useful on snare, changing placement or tuning can beat changing the mic.

Thanks for the suggestions...I'll have some things to try tonight. Please keep them coming!

Justin- Tad Donley says the Shure Green Bullet beats the M201 pants down. Are you gonna argue with a Mutt Lange? :D

AKG C61 and the Groove Tubes GT44. Both excellent snare mics. I can't say enough good things about those mics. I like them both a lot. The Blue Mouse is also pretty fun.

On the dynamic side, I really do like the EV/Blue Raven. And second the 441.

+1 on the 441. I also really like the AKG D19 if you can find one.
