Long Playing Tape: Quality Compromise?

Post by A-Barr » Sat Dec 01, 2007 11:08 am

Good weekend, all,

Just wondering, as a tape newbie, is there a qualitative difference in long playing vs. regular tape? If they can fit 3600' in the same space as 2500', I think there must be a reason they use the thicker formula for the 2500' spools. Is it less likely to stretch? Print through?

Thanks,

Will stretch more but that shouldn't bother you unless you rewind over and over again a lot many times.

The backing is thinner as is the oxide layer. The deeper the layer of oxide, the better the recorded signal. More tape to record a signal of lesser quality at 3600'. Your choice. It will have a 'sound', but is it a sound you will like?

Hm, US Recording Media says
This tape is the same as SM911 except on a thinner, long play 1 mil [as opposed to 1.5] base. Same performance but longer record time.
But then again, they have a vested interest... although I would expect them to have a vested interest in selling less tape at a higher cost.

Thanks for the responses!
