Gabe Roth interview...

Post by mrdazobee » Wed Dec 12, 2007 5:46 am

Just been reading through that interview with Gabe Roth of the daptone label.I really like that guitar sound they get and he mentions using a "shitty" hollowbody like a harmony rocket or a fender coronado.I think these both have single coil pickups? Can anyone recommend any other names to look into that might achieve a similar sound? The rocket and coronado are quite hard to come by in the UK.Thanks.

So find whatever shitty hollowbody is cheap in the UK! For real. Any shitty hollowbody will do the trick.

Yeah,I just thought it a bit strange that he says "shitty hollowbody" but the guitars he mentions seem to be quite well regarded, and not that cheap!

Considering that 60's Gibson ES-330s and Epi Casinos go for $2500-5000 and Gibson ES 335s go for much more, Harmony Rockets and Fender Coronados are a steal.

Harmonys, Kays, and Silivertones are all great and relatively inexpensive. They were mostly made for mail order catalog companies in the U.S. like Sears and Wards. That said, I am not sure of the extent to which they are available in the U.K.

At any rate, Airline is another model you may want to look out for as well as Regal and Danelectro. Regal was made by Harmony and briefly licensed to Fender but they're basically a Harmony guitar.

I've been using a hollow chamber Airline (no f-holes) for a ton of stuff lately. It has single coil pickups like most of the others on this list.

Eastwood has been producing guitars that are inspired by cool old guitars that aren't necessarily Gibson or Fender: Mosrites, Harmony's, some older Japanese guitars.

I have their EEB-1 (Ampeg Scroll Headstock bass copy). It's well made and sounds great, plays well.

If you can't figure out anything else check that out.

I saw those guys this weekend here in Seattle. The guitar player played an excellent/crappy Hagstrom. i thought it was a harmony at first. Remember "shitty is pretty".
On a similar note, Peter ,Bjorn, and John play Hagstroms, too (Nationalistic pride???)
But they engaged in heavy tuning in between every song...

I have a Danelectro and it seems to pull it off.

I am also looking for a hollowbody, maybe some es-335 knock-off, even cheaper than the Epiphone Dot. Although it might just sound crappy instead of shitty.

I have a Japanese made 70's vintage semi-hollow body from "Global" that actually sounds pretty nice - picked it up for $300 including a gig bag about a year ago. I'm sure there's more of these "sleepers" around somewhere.

Best regards,
Steve Berson

Wise words from Joel :)
Danelectro are pretty cheap in the UK at the moment for sure - have seen deals around the ?125-150 region in quite a few places - that's new too.
Seconded on the Eastwood front - have some friends who've bought them and rate them highly, plus with the pound / dollar shenanigans, they're seriously tempting right now :)

As for the 335 copies; columbus, sakai and hondo all made decent models in the 70s / 80's, but apparently the bolt on neck versions were a bit rubbish at staying in tune, so look for a set neck. That said - the bolt on neck might be just the bit of shitty-ness you're after
Sadly, these three brands seem to be about to fall into the 'vintage rare' pit if recent ebay prices (in the UK) are anything to go by ... Look for the Korean brands from the 70s / 80s too, Tokai are the most well known perhaps, but there's Eros and others besides. Plus, although not hollowbody, the late 80's / early 90s Korean made Squires (with the silver logo) are well worth a look, and cheap in the UK if you hunt around. I have a strat and a tele, and the tele is most definitely capable of some dirty funk twang

I wasnt kidding. Any shitty hollowbody gives a certain overtone/harmonic series that gives that killer, weirdly mic'd, nobody-can-name-it sound that a lot of those old amazing funk records have.

Make your own fucked up sounds and have people interview YOU!

It really can be fun to find a freaky guitar for cheap and have it do something nobody else quite has.

Good work mate, sound like a decent score! Hope it works out for you - post some links when you've got some recording done and we'll rate the shittyness!
