Anyone ever use these on overheads? Or any other likes/dislikes for certain applications? I have access to 2 and might even be able to own them, so I was wondering if they are worth adding to a mic collection, or are they mainly a live mic? I tried one on vocals and I liked how i didn't have to cut any low end, since the mic starts falling off at about 100 Hz. Any opinions?

I've had one for going on 10 years. I use it mainly as my live vocal mic, yes, but I have recorded vocals in the studio with it (myself and others) and it sounds damn good for certain voices.

I really haven't tried it on other sources, but it would be interesting to hear a pair as overheads. Why not?

I don't imagine they'd be all that great on anything at a distance. I'd recommend having at least one though. They do record nicely on some voices, and if you are using monitors instead of headphones, they'll reject OK off the rear and sound more hi-fi than a 58...

Thanks guys. That sounds right, since the pattern is hypercardoid. But I will try to keep one as a vocal.

I tried my Beta 87a on a guitar cab for a couple sessions. It sounded really nice! This was a solid state amp being used by a jazz guitarist. The sound was full and meaty. I can dig it!
