An akai mg1214- man, that brings back memories. First recorder I ever owned when I was 18. Great machine, but proprietary, and don't count on getting tapes easily. Capstan motor crapped out on mine, otherwise i'd probably still use it. I'm pretty sure they made a stand alone version sans mixer. I'd go for a 1/4 fostex or something similar. Those can sound great with a good front end.
You can get this unit in a rack mount version. (Just the recorder section). But good luck trying to find one. Actually, this is a good sounding unit! My friend has one, ( like the one in the picture) but the transport stopped working and can't seem to find anyone to repair it.. It think these things where "hi dollar" when they were new. ( I'm thinking $11 to $12,000.00) It has great feeling faders, etc. Good luck..blixton wrote:Im sure digital sounds great, but it doesn't turn me on.
If that MG1214 didn't come with the fader section Id get one. It looks too big. Thanks for the suggestions though
What do you think would result in a better sound? Record parts through a high end pre to a 1/2 inch tape on a great deck and transfer to a sampler at 96khz. Or record through high end pres to the MG1214? I'm worried the sampler will make things too glossy and flat. I'm also afraid the MG1214 will be the weak link in an other wise high end chain.
