I love the Stellavox SP9. And other such tape recorders like this.

Super small. Which means fun to use and easy to work with. Is there a way to make them multitrack or are there 8 track recorders out there that sound great but are tiny? Thanks

The Tascam 38 is 1/2" and is in no way small. It's a beast but a good beast.Danly wrote:do a search of "reel to reel 1/4"" on ebay.

What about all the digital options? Are you against those? As far as portability for price, a lot of the new digital field-recorder 4/8-tracks are worth a shot. If you're recording bats in an old abandoned mental hospital, or a street preacher, or an outdoor brass band, basically anything I'd go with features and convenience of a 24-bit field recorder. But maybe this is not what you want.

Hi, yeah, I'm not into digital. I want to keep the sound chain high end.
So, lets say I have a discreet studer mixer that sounds incredible. What would be a great small multitrack recorder to pair up with it? Not interested in digital.
I want to get a proper r2r, but I'm also interested in something more compact.
Maybe something that accidentally sounds really cool. Something with an interesting compression. Or a sound of its own. These cheap tascam multitrack things with the mixers built in are not interesting to me.

Again, Akai MG1214. I can't think of anything else that fits your description. The only other non-digital recorders that are compact are cassette things, or the 388, which you say you don't want. The Akai uses tapes similar to betamax to record 12 tracks of analog audio. They have a built-in mixer but you don't have to use it.
Also, if you want to keep it "high end," you won't get that in a compact tape machine. You will need a RTR, or you'll need to go digital, which in fact can sound excellent.

Im sure digital sounds great, but it doesn't turn me on.
If that MG1214 didn't come with the fader section Id get one. It looks too big. Thanks for the suggestions though

That's where I was coming from. Something that's compact AND "high end", but not large format r2r, but still "high end"... that's tough. +1 Nagra. I understand your not wanting to go digital, but you might have to choose btw compact and high-end tape.inverseroom wrote:...if you want to keep it "high end," you won't get that in a compact tape machine.
