Bug spray instead of cymbals

Post by jckinnick » Tue Dec 18, 2007 3:58 pm

Can anybody enlighten me on this little studio trick? I heard they would do this on old Brazilian tunes.

I've used an spray can in a percussion loop for a song. It doesn't sound anything like cymbals. More like a blast of white noise.

Sure. First you set up your most expensive mic, and spray it directly into the capsule over and over again. Only then will you fulfill your recording destiny.

I heard that the Talking Heads used an aerosol spray for an open HH sound.

That might the sound on their cover of "Take me to the River," a song that could use to be retired from the universe...

What? Man, I love the Heads version of that song. Even so, it doesn't come close to Reverend Al singing it.

No shit. I think it's pretty badass. Have you ever seen the Saturday Night Live performance? Fuck man, every guitarist in the world could stand to watch that as an example of how to play in-time with restraint. It's dead-solid pocket and if I recall correctly, a little slower than the record.

My comment was more related to every other freaking band on the planet doing a shitty version. The Head version is cool and of course the good reverend's is wonderful...

So to augment my above statement Take me to the River should be retired except for Al Green and Talking Heads versions. Don't even mention the Annie Lennox version to me!

i'd suggest you use a can of compressed air rather than bug spray. i would think that gating white or pink noise would provide a similar sound. if you really feel the need, play the gated noise track through a speaker and mic it.

You can't get that old Brazilian bug spray sound these days. They used DDT, which is now outlawed. I heard Line 6 is coming out with a plug-in that models vintage pesticides. No word whether it also includes chloroflourocarbons.

Actually, I'm curious why this would be a Brazilian thing, and what more there might be to that story.

Has no hip-hop tagger-type used the sound of a spraypaint can?

Bryan Ferry's version of TMTTR, on The Bride Stripped Bare, has some funky chewy goodness. Of course, you've either got to love his vocal melodrama or listen past it.

There's a clip in the Joy Division movie Control with them in the studio doing the spray can thing. Can't remember what the song was. It's a good film if you haven't seen it. I'm not much for Joy Division but I still liked the movie.

For great bug spray cymbals, don't even bother with the stuff you find on the shelves nowadays. See if you can find some of the original Black Flag or OFF! from the seventies...that's the shit to get and if you watch your local listings, you'll find a lot of that stuff at estate sales and whatnot...you gotta watch for it though as it's usually not for sale per se.

Next up....

Fly swatter snare, mouse trap kick drum, and D-Con box toms!

Sorry....just funning.
