I am not certain and too lazy to investigate, but I have an indistinct memory of reading zepplin 1 was recorded on a 1" 8 track machine.
the record sounds like it was anyway. forgive if i am mistaken.

my understanding is some of that first album was 4-track, some of it 8.

no idea about speed or media size.

i've also repeatedly read that most of the electric guitar was a Telecaster through a small (Oahu?) amp.

you're totally right.

btw, what was his fuzz back then (other than just cranking the amp, which he obviously did more than a little)?

i'm currently rocking a '72 Telecaster Custom into a Valve Junior head into an RCA 1x10" cab loaded with an old Jensen.

it sounds great, but i'm no Jimmy Page...more like the unholy love child of Neil Finn and David Gilmour!

Without doing any actual research, I think the first record was done at Olympic, so a custom Sweatham console that would evolve in to the Helios design and company.

And yes the first 3-4 records have a lot of Telecaster, including the Stairway solo.

As to the fuzz question, I read that at some point in time some guitars were recorded direct with the pres in the board pushed to clipping. I think that might have been for Whole Lotta Love though...

Just to add more questions to the mix:

JP had a les paul with some smart wiring mods, too. things like getting two coils in parallel - he loves those thin sounds

The best part about Dazzed And Confused is the sound of the bass on the intro for me. Without question.. Also, the sound of the guitar at the very end. There is a wonderful saturated distortion there.
I am interested in what console they used. Its an impossible question I know. Know way to know.

But was this transistor music or valve music?

what kind of tube desks were available? Would an ampex mx-35 approximate the sound? Or was it one of those esoteric Telefunken v72 custom desks from germany? Oh no one knows.
