Well, presumably the point isn't just getting the definition, it's starting a conversation that might end up being interesting.

I heard someone say that if you don't know what a stem then you don't need to use them. Hmm...

I didn't know other people even did such a thing when I first did some stem mixing, I was just solving a problem!

Not neccesarily, it could simply be that you don't know that particular term. We called them "splits" for years before the term "stems" filtered in from the film world.

Yeah- sorry if I came off a little cranky. It just seems like often people are looking for simple answers, and rather than check the obvious wealth of resources available on the web and in books (books!?!), folks post on the forum. But whatevs- I shall crank no more. Cheers,
Ryan

Edit: dammit, someone dug up an old thread again. Gonna keep the article up anyway in case anyone's interested...

I find a lot of young recordists calling all tracks stems. It gets a little confusing. I asked someone who "makes beats" if I could get individual tracks for a project, and he said "you mean stems?" I said I wanted everything separate, he answered "yeah, stems."

Culture changes language. Or ruins it.

Definition of terms is critical in communication!
