I've used both with decent results, anyone care to weigh in their choice?

i think its the tuning of the snare drum that accounts for like 90% of the sound-
those are both fine mics to use...

+1

If the mic/preamp dont distort. The mic is critical, but many of the bad sounds I have delt with are the snare, its tuning, the room, Mic position and playing style.

I had a drummer that basicly held the snare beween his legs and moved it as he played. His stand would support the snare but the snare stand legs were very loose. Worse snare time I ever had

I've found the Beta to work OK but one thing to watch out for is it's ability to pick up a lot of hi-hat. The Beta is pretty bright and it's pretty hot.

i havent used the beta one. only the other. i prefer my audix i5 on the snare, top and bottom, over the regular 57. how does the beta differ from the regular? besides price obviously...

never used a beta 57, but recently started using the i5 instead of a 57 on snare. to me, the i5 has a lot more high-end than a 57. i also found that - for me - it doesn't take eq all that well. if I try boosting anything over 2k by more than a db or two, it gets shrill/brittle in a hurry. that being said, i like that fact it doesn't really need any eq in the recordings I've used it on.

i also like the i5 on electric guitar if i want it to cut through more than a 57.

i had fairly good results on a guitar cab 2. my snare just sounds better with the i5. not much eq. no boosting. most cutting.

I use both.
For me the b57 has the angry upper mid thing, while the i5 seems smooth and more hi-fi.
Either of them will do the job.
Both are useful to have around.

I still like the standard 57 and 421 on guitar cab more than either of them.
The B57 seems way brighter than the standard 57 to me.

This freakin kills me about the beta. Placement is such a bear with that thing that I usually swap it out for the regular old 57. The beta doesn't really give a "natural" sound IMHO, but I'm curious about the i5 as I have never used it and I'm always looking for new ways to get drum sounds, especially since I just moved and I have a brand new studio space to learn!
