My surprise, tuning like Bonham
My surprise, tuning like Bonham
So the other day after watching a bunch of Zep youtube stuff I thought it would be cool to tune up my set using the same heads/tunign as Bonham.
I based my info on his former tech jeff Ocheltree who has a nice little vid on the web about how the drums were tuned and the specific heads used.
I was blown away on how seemingly illogical it seemed...tuning the drums quite high especially on the resonant side and the big "drum" sound it yielded, meaning you end up realy hearing the drum especialy on the snare. The snare to me ended up sounding like a timbale' with snares and at the same time WOW! there was that Bonham sound.
Same with the Bass...high tuning(esp. on resonant)/big sound.
Then my biggest surprise, the tighter tension on all the heads resulted in me being able to play much of the Bonham riffs with ease. The three doubles on the bass drum from "good times bad times" came off easy...so much fun!
Just thought i would share this cool experience, Tom.

Yep, you're right, full head on the front...I guess the thing i kept saying while I was hearing where ity was all going was the drums are sounding like...well, drums.
I had my girlfriend bang on em a bit and they do sound very nice, they are not the same sizes, which is cool cause they sound different but the same?

OT, but your sig. gave me a huge laugh. Emo's never been better summarized!T-rex wrote:Yeah when you tune the BD up tight suddenly all of the Bonham crazy foot pedal work starts to make sense! Especially with a full head on the front, then you really get rebound off of the drum head.

I know I love that line. I wish I could take credit for it but a friend of mine saw it somewhere.MT wrote:OT, but your sig. gave me a huge laugh. Sorry for not getting yo that link, I was out of town for a few days with the band...another strange side note about the drum tuing, I play with earplugs in all th tie and have grown so used to how I usually tune my drums that it was very strange to hear them this way, but with the tighter tuning I could definately pull off a bit more in the way of chops easier. lots o fun.
