Good ideas here, I never heard about the Holy Stain (I somehow think Dio should sing a song called "Holy Stain"). I am not too familiar with the Melodica, other than that one Hooters song from 1987 or so. I am also looking at some mini-keyboard midi controllers in GC's flyer. Hmm....

I do like the e-bow idea, but how about a used upright piano from Craigslist!

I know you want just one item, otherwise I'd say go and get a kazoo, triangle, xylophone, cowbell and a cheap student violin .

Screw it, get a used trombone!

AAAAH!!

This is what you must do:

Go to the provided link and buy "Recording the Beatles" by Kevin Ryan and Brian Kehew!!!

This huge, beautiful volume is the most exhaustive, insanely researched documentation of the gear and methods of the Fab Four sessions from a technical point of view. Tons of pictures, cool extras.

ROCK!!!

For the single bill I got myself a phantom powered carbon mic from http://www.myspace.com/carbonmicrophone

Lots of fun.

Otherwise may I suggest a couple of other places I sent $100 to each this past holidays:

Fuck saving fives, get the Carbon Microphone.

+1 on Recording the Beatles. I just received it as a Christmas gift from the band who I am working with. They're friends of mine, but even better friends now!

I, too, had a few extra Christmas dollars this year.

Today I went tio the local Go-'Round, and got an LP 6" cowbell, and a wood block with mallet, both for US$30.

Percussion can be fairly cheap, and is always eventually usefull.

You can get a really nice pennywhistle for $100, and it's an instrument that's easy to learn, easy to store, fun to play, sounds good, and helps you focus on melody instead of music theory. Go here: http://www.chiffandfipple.com/, and get some ideas on what pennywhistles can do for you.

I picked up a DigiTech RP90 today, just under $100 from my local guitar shop. It's fun, I have the RP50 (soon for sale) but this has the pedal thingy. I can do the whammy pitch-shift stuff like the kids do nowadays. Thanks everyone for the suggestions!

If I had 100 dollars to spend I'd either get A used rack case off craigslist, spend a hundred bucks at redco, an aphex 205 or some parts for a diy mic pre and wait a while so I could finish it.
