he's playing an Ondes Martenot (or a replica). the string thing, is a slide that's a part of the instrument. they are fun to play. you can check out the wiki page here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ondes_Martenot

or check a bunch of people playing them in this version of how to disappear completely.

its really fun to play...i've done it a few times at a friend's place. weird spooky sounds! :)

Newbie TapeOpHead question - but what is Thom's mic there? I see that the radio genius Phil Hendrie uses the same microphone...

...is that the RE20???

Does Thom record his vox for the records with an RE20?

Every time I've seen him in pictures and on "From The Basement" he's been recorded with a '47.

I read an interview with Nigel Godrich that said Thom alternated between a 47 and a Rode tube mic (I assume it's the Classic).

The only other place I've seen Thom use an RE20 is in the video for Lucky. It looks like a video of the actual recording of the song, which would make sense given that it was recorded for the Help album (where 20 artists went into different studios throughout the UK on the same day to each record a song for the album). But, I did read somewhere that Radiohead had already recorded the song and just made a video for it that day. Don't know if this is true or not.

Does any one have any idea what type of reverb he uses on his voice? I know it is mostly his technique, but the reverb sounds so good.

Anyone who got the discbox, make sure to check out the pictures included on the second cd. There are a TON of studio shots and quite a few where you can make out a lot of the equipment being used. Godrich really likes 1176's and even though it sounds less effected than others, it looks like the band had all their huge pedalboards setup. It also looks like they were working on an old API at some point. Also, classic shot of a U47 being used to record a tiny shitty Fender Frontman amp. It looks so wrong but it sounds so good where ever they put it.
