Should I get one mk219 PE or two mk012??

Post by MakeWar » Thu Jan 10, 2008 6:41 am

Hi!!

I've been reading this forum for about two years and never took the time to register. I must say that I've learned a lot from you guys. Thank you.

Now I've got a question. I recently bought one Octava mk219 PE Mod and now that I've selled some things I've got cash to buy either another mk219 PE or a pair of matched mk012.

I have an M-Audio DMP3 preamp and a Phonic Firewire mixer so I'm only able to send two mics at a time through the preamp, but could use the shitty preamp from the mixer if I needed it.

My purpose is to use the mics to record acoustic stuff and vocals mainly. But I'd also like to use them as overhead mics on drums.

I hope you guys can help me with this choice!!

I'd go with the mc012's because you can add different capsules in the future. The cardioid caps are great, the hyper's are useful for lots of stuff, the omni's are terrific, and the Red cardioid caps are also really versatile.

When in doubt, go for variety. And I'd say a pair of mk012 gives you oodles of options.

The mk219PE is a nice mic- probably don't need 2 of them.

They are very different sounding mics. Both are good, but I would go with the MK012

thank you all.

Seems like you all agree, that's cool! I had that doubt only because I thought the moded mk219 was way better than the standard 012s, but maybe it's not only about quality but color and feel, isn't it?

I've never used a modded 219, but in terms of quality, ain't nothing wrong with 012's.

I was going to mention one of my MK-219PEs for sale on buy/sell, but noticed you have one already.

I agree that they are very nice, but one is enough for me.

I'd go for the 012s as well. I'm actually picking up a second pair, I've tried a couple other SDC microphone (MXL 603, Shure SM81, Rode NT5) and they didn't out perform the Oktavas, so I'm going back to them.

012s.
I record, mix, and master in my Philly-based home studio, the Spacement. https://linktr.ee/ipressrecord
