I'm pressing up vinyl, who should I go with?

Post by bp » Wed Jan 16, 2008 10:33 am

Hello there,

I recently gave up on recordpressing.com and am curious in regards to some other vinyl manufacturing spots that do good work. The only oher spot I know of is URP and my understanding is that their rates are a little higher then everywhere else. Anybody have any good experiences with a particular spot?

All the best,
pz

piratespress is bleh, their vinyl quality is usually just so-so and its always completely covered in little specks of dust or paper or something. i think most people use them for their color swirl vinyl.. but in the past year its been completely played out to the point that its become a running joke on vinyl boards. very thin vinyl all around.. not at all what you want if you're going for sound quality.
united has a good track record and sometimes has great package deals. erika is another big name that some people swear by.

my suggestion is to think of a recent record thats come out on vinyl and sounds great and ask the label where they pressed it.

united is actually usually the cheapest in my experience. RTI is best. erika has had mixed results but decent. this was a while ago though. rainbo did a good job in my book recently.

recordpressing looks like just a reseller, and they're just having GZ press it (which is also what pirate press does). http://www.gzvinyl.com/

heard good things about http://brooklynphono.com/ too.

i had masterdisk press something once but they really just farmed it out too. i hate that. i'd make sure you use someone who's really pressing it there at the plant - cut out the middle man. get it so you can pick up the phone and talk to someone who can walk down the hall and actually do something about it instead of just send an email or make a call on your behalf.

You should check the viva la vinyl board. I haven't been on there for a long time but they used to have some good threads about vinyl manufacturers.

I sincerly apreciate everyone's help!

Yeah, piratepress I was familiar with but they just cut at the same so-so czech plant.... they were founded by ex-employees of recordpressing.com that disagreed with their old employer, so i guess they use a lot of the same sources to do their work.

I'll do a little research on some of the other folk you mentioned....once again thanks for all the help.
