ribbon microphone service -- sank??

Post by mickchelski » Sat Jan 19, 2008 2:34 pm

I have a B & O stereo ribbon with a light hum on the top (BM7) portion of the mic. I would like to get it seviced and mabe re-ribboned if necessary.

Stephen Sank was the frist person to come to mind, however I a little on line research it seems that there is alot of negitive information concering his turn around time and some have accused him of theft.

Does anyone have any additional information to corroborate or denounce this info as fiction??

Or are there any reliable people/ or companies that are recomended for this work....Thanks to anyone for there time and information.

Clarence Kane at ENAK mic repair in New Jersey is fantastic. He specializes in RCA mic (and used to work for them), but I'm pretty sure he'll work on other stuff as well. Wes Dooley (AEA) is also a ribbon mic specialist on the West Coast and can probably hook you up as well. I've never had any personal experience with Wes, but his reputation is pretty excellent and I don't know of anyone who's had any sort of questionable dealings with him.

I agree with both recommendations above, I'm busy with Oktava, Nady & group buy ribbon mics upgrades.

I have an M160 that needs a re-ribbon and Enak never returned my emails. I'm not sure if it's just an isolated incident or not. That said, I'm looking for a place to do it, so I'd like to hear some responses as well.

uh.. why not get it re-ribboned by beyerdynamic? they have a service center in long island, ny that'll bring it back to 100% m160. i had one repaired there last year, great service.

I'd echo going to beyer usa for repair of their microphones. Although you can put a ribbon with standard corrugation (horizontal) in the microphone, the only people who can make the beyer ribbon is beyer.

The Beyer re-ribbon is basically a replacement of all the guts from what I understand. I'd like to keep the vintage mojo and only replace the ribbon.

Beyer will replace the guts with the same parts that were always in that mic. I can understand your feelings about a vintage mojo, but the sound of a ribbon mic doesn't improve over the course of a couple of years.
I had two of my Beyer ribbon mics re-ribboned by Steve Sank (M260 and M500) and they sound a lot different than they did before. I really like the difference though.
Beyer also re-ribboned one of my M160s and it was cheaper than I expected it to be - at least here in Germany.
I like how the M160 sounds and that's why I didn't send it to Sank.

+1 For Enak. Beyer is also awesome. Enak serviced my 77dx. Beyerdynamic matched my m130/m160 a while ago.
Phone works best for Enak.

"Beyer is also awesome."

What's Beyer getting for a re-ribbon these days?

I had them do a pair of M260s about 15 years ago, and it was over 200 bucks per mic....

Just curious as to what it would cost me these days....

Cant remember how much it was...but not that much...they just matched them. no re-ribboning took place...
