QQ: where can one get 'blank'/uncut racks for gear?

Post by themagicmanmdt » Fri Jan 25, 2008 11:02 am

I'm getting on the PM1000 strip bandwagon (before they get 'racked out') and getting some channel strips, but I need to get them racked up.

Where's the place to get blank racks to cut for racking outboard gear?

Thanks!

I think he needs the entire case, not just the pannels.

For empty rack chassis, I've been pretty happy w/ Circuit Specialists. Do a search for "chassis". Fairly good prices, too

They are what I used for mine. You can even hear them in use on the new Chris Brown record "Exclusive".

I've used Parmetal and they make a nice 2U case but it's about $70 (or more?) with shipping. So I usually go to Redco and get their 1U or 2U flat aluminum panels (8 & 10 bucks respectively) then go to my local goodwill and search through the old Ethernet switch bone-pile until I find a sturdy and cheap chassis and bolt that Redco plate on the front so it looks nice. just make sure you get a chassis that opens nice (some are a real pain and not worth the $50 savings).

If I may ask - what instruments, etc. did you use them for or how did you use them? I've used them on drums, bass, Roland v-drums, and a few other things. just curious what others are doing.

thanks, Mike

I used them on his vocals, actually. He likes to use a Sony C800 G (which I find a little harsh on his voice) and the PM1K really rounded out the sound, smoothed over the highs a bit.

For what it's worth, I used my ADL 1000 after the PM1K to "tape"

Does anyone know of any place else to get the entire enclosure? I can find panels galore online but never boxes. Seems like some kind of racket...

This is slightly related, but . .

Does anyone have a good source for getting front panels engraved/printed in the US?

This is sort of related to some prodigy pro projects that I'm lining up. The guy Purusha over there makes some really nice stuff that a ton of people use at prodigy pro, but a lot of those guys are in Europe. And the exchange rate is murder.

Just trying to find a plausible solution for the front panel/case for a couple Gyraf pultecs.

That circuit specialist case looks AWESOME! I'd love to have that color and have the proper pultec markings/holes.

Anyway, what do you U.S. guys do in that regard?
Stilgar, we've got wormsign the likes of which God has never seen!

The circuit specialists chassis come as black boxes. I painted and silk screened the panel myself. If you like the color, it's called "safety blue". It comes in a spray can from Home Depot.

I used frontpanelexpress.com for my API 312 recently. It turned out very nice. They have their own proprietary design software, but you can import HPGL files into it since their fonts are lacking. A 2U faceplate would generally run about $100.

I think for my next project, I'm going to try and find some place locally. I actually found a place with a laser engraver, but as soon as I told them that I only wanted one faceplate done, they stopped returning my emails.

Check around for local "trophy" shops, which do a lot of one-off engraving.

That's a great idea Brian. FrontPanelExpress is prohibitively expensive here in Singapore.
