Massey's tape delay plug is beyond fantastic.

i use the Kjaerhus Audio Classic Delay set to "tape" as a mildish slap instead of a reverb on alot of my own lead vocals.

I like the ohmboyz plugin, usually feeding into one or more reverbs.

SuperTaps is cool because it's so flexible, and the interface is so intuitive and straightforward.

Unfortunately, it doesn't have much sound or personality of it's own. You can give it character, but it takes work.

The moogerfooger and telray delays have some fairly cool personality, but it's not easy to quickly dial in specific metric delay effects on either.

Echo Farm was one of the first truly good delay plugins ever available, and it's still very useable. Unfortunately, I believe it's still only available on Digi TDM systems. EchoBoy is better... but then again, maybe I just feel that way because I haven't used it enough to find anything I dislike about it.

I've just downloaded the demo of the Massey delay, but haven't had a chance to mess around with it yet. It looks promising, and all of Steven's products are incredible. I'd be surprised if I didn't end up buying it sometime in the next couple weeks.

ReaDelay, one of the delay plugins that come with Reaper is pretty amazingly clear and powerful. If you use Reaper, you can write automation for each track it is on to control a bunch of it's parameters (which makes for some fun Dub mixing, for sure).

Even if you don't use Reaper, they've made several of their plugins available for free download:

The compressor and gate that come with these are really good too. I think all Reaper plugins are 64 bit internal math processing.

Take any delay and slap on an aux. Put an eq before the delay on the aux. HPF up to 300 or so and LPF down to 4k let's say. Bump it up at 800 to 1k. Route the aux back into itself via an aux send.

The delay will deteriorate each time it repeats back onto itself due to the EQ. Add a tape saturation plug if you'd like.

Route some of the delay into a vocal plate...

Now automate the feedback aux send to keep it from distorting too much and exploding out of control. Just before it's wigs out trim it back. Push back over and down again. Ride your peaks in the tune as you go. You'll have a vocal that sounds like it's going to splatter all over the windshield at any moment... or one that's riding on a calm tide depending on your whim.
