my 57 died :(

Post by ygokazuki » Sat Feb 02, 2008 6:58 pm

it worked fine and then today all the low-end was gone, and then it wouldn't output anything.
it wasn't the cable, I checked with other mics.
any help would be greatly appreciated
edit: great news...it's a fake 57 as per
http://www.tts.se/UserFiles/File/Falska ... ofoner.pdf

Sometimes the wires that connect the barrel to the cartdige get twisted so far that they snap. That's the most frequent culprit. I've soldered mine back together after it got stepped on and broke. Taped it up, now it works just fine.

No... when those wires break they generally just plain old don't work, or they have an intermittent connection.

If you lose all base and it sounds like you're talking into broken telephone, the capsule is probably coming apart at the edges. It's fairly rare, but it happens sometimes. I'm not sure if it's worth repairing from financial standpoint...

Yip. I've got a 57 around with the same problem and it definitely isn't just the cables (I've repaired that before and took a look). I haven't gone any deeper than that though. Just gotta find a minute...

I opened it and the cables seem securely attached.
Repair from sure is $55 but I could probably find another 57 for not much more than that. Depressing. :(
Thx for all the help...keep it coming, much appreciated

Dead SM57

Post by eh91311 » Sun Feb 03, 2008 1:10 pm

Terrible to hear about your SM57. Don't buy a used one, get a new one that hasn't been subjected to cannon-shot snare hits and death-metal-volume guitar amps. For less than $100 street price, get the new one and use it up.

ive also seen one wire come loose from the transformer in the barrel. Somehow it was still transmitting sound thru one wire, pkus the ground of the body of the mic. When I figured it out I was quite happy, as I was super duper ultra broke back then.
On a side note I cant stand MI retailers that charge $100 for a 57. Or worse have the nerve to charge $100 and call it the sale price! $80 or maybe $85 is reasonable.

Send it to Shure. Might as well - I'd bet if it's not a simple fix they just send you another one. At least you save a few bucks, and there's one less broken mic floating around in the world.

I have never known of Shure to fix a mic sent in for repair. Every one I have ever sent (10+) has been replaced with a brand new one in the box with all accessories.

and, I will add, that their turn around time has always been fast.

It's a lot cheaper for them to send you a 57 or 58 than to spend time fixing it.

Don't know about Neumann...

Shure's manufacturing cost of a 57 and 58 is $8.

Cheaper to send you a new one.
