I love this mic on kick. End address, great rear rejection, if you close mic the FOK, you're gonna get almost nothing but FOK.

I've been working with a dynamic mic setup for drums as well. No fancy pres - just going through a RAMSA WR8118. The ol' SM57 trick on snare, two 635a's for overheads, and a borrowed Audix D6. I must admit, it ain't too shabby. Tried the D6 through a Presonus MP20 - I prefer the RAMSA pre over it; the Presonus seemed to sound "rattly".

The kick sounded a bit thwacky in the 635a's though, not so thrilled about that. It seems to cover up the the nice thump of the kick track. Anyone have any suggestions?

Regardless, it's getting there. Move them mics around! Yeah!

I just got started in that world myself this year (only one A12 right now) and your post really gets me all fired up to build some more.

I'd recommend my route: 3 A12s, 2 N72s and 3 J99s

the N72 are the ones i use least, but they are good for toms with their dial-able grit.
Na man just build a bunch of one type (the A12 is API ish right) and do the whole drum-set (1 big instrument) with 'em. Hell try something crazy like making a whole record with one one preamp!

Not to be off topic, but why not spend the time to improve the acoustics of your room???

1 word... laziness

but youre right.... i'm just in an apartment, I record pretty infrequently and if I could get around putting up a bunch of 703, that would be nice.

i guess the core of my question is... are condensers on drums a paradigm that can be re-thought with good outcomes?

Depending on the OHs, I use a HP filter so I don't get and phasey suck on my FOK mic.

What sort of paradigm? I'm totally confused by that question. I record drums with nothing but condensers most of the time. That's not to say that I won't use dynamics or anything, but what does using one type of mic have to do with any sort of paradigm?

Chris, there is clearly a paradigm for mic'ing drums.

it generally revolves around dynamics for close mic'ing and condensers to capture the kit... OHs, FOK, room...

If you asked 10 random engineers to mic a drum kit, they'd probably all use with condensers as overheads... now, i'm not saying there is anything wrong with this, I'm just saying condensers are much more detailed than dynamics and maybe by using exclusively dynamics *I* can ignore some of that ugly ambiance in my room.

just seeing people's thoughts / experiences.

Yeah, but plenty of people use either condensers, dynamics, or even ribbons as close mics on kick, snare, and toms, and ribbon mics are increasingly popular as overhead mics these days. And every once in a while, you get a competent engineer who'll change things up depending on what the session requires.

well and good!

i'm just asking about using moving-coil dynamics exclusively on a drum kit

I have been doing this recently, since my only LDC is on the kick. I like it.
