Your mic locker looks like this. What do you buy next?

Post by Mradyfist » Tue Feb 12, 2008 11:06 am

I talked with my studio partner a couple days ago, and we had a discussion about our next upcoming purchase. Both of us agree that our mic locker is a major weakness in our current setup, so we want to look at getting something new. Here's what we have:

1x Neumann TLM-103
1x EV RE-27
2x Shure SM81
2x Shure SM57
1x Shure Beta 52
1x Audix D6
3x Audix D2
1x Audix D4
1x Studio Projects B1
1x JoeMeek JM47
1x JoeMeek JM27
1x Naiant MSH-1X

Plus miscellaneous crappy mics.

Obviously we have some ideas of what we might want, but I think it would be more interesting to leave those out right now. So, let's pretend that you open your mic locker and you see the above list sitting there. What's the first thing you'd run out and buy? (I'd prefer sub-$1000, but it's not a requisite.)

A few 'premier' mics. Definitely, show pieces that sound great on vocals.

i'd take the $1000 and get as many work horse mics as possible. I like to have lots of choices when tracking a band and favour having lots of really good mics over having one really great mic. I can always rent a really great mic.
Think 421, Beyer M88, any and all used EV dynamics (RE10, RE11, RE15, 635a, 664, 666), any and all used AKG dynamics, a nice ribbon of some kind.

So many choices.

I think a used Soundelux U195 and Blue Kiwi can be had for under $1000 used and those are pretty. If you like the Beta52, keep it, but I recently converted to the Sennheiser e602 and it's a huge improvement. I would grab a pair of MD421s for toms and electric guitar as well. A tube microphone might be nice, a Groove Tubes MD-1a maybe?

I second the U195. Really amazing on a lot of different sources and more importantly not bad on anything. My advice is sell the TLM103 and put that $$$$$ with the $1000 you wanted to spend and get the U195 and a Crowley and Tripp Naked Eye

Check out the Mojave MA 200 for a nice tube mic and maybe a nice ribbon mic, the Beyer M160 is a really nice one.

omnis: a couple of stapes would be a good addition. Or get a oktava kit with the omni capsules

ribbon: aea r84

over-budget ldc: pearlman tm-1 (but damn do I love that mic).

on-budget ldc: at4060, or an older groove tubes (md1 or 2 or 3, or md6tm). maybe a pearlman tm2? Haven't tried one.

I LOVE my AKG 414 (c414xlII). Love it. Maybe a Royer as was mentioned. I also would pick up an AKG D112. AND an AUDIX i5-I really like these a lot.

Someone said the AT4050...I second those as well. Not too expensive, but sound pretty good.
