TERRIBLE sounding files...

Post by JohnDavisNYC » Tue Feb 19, 2008 8:12 pm

wow... i just got some stuff to mix... and it is terrible. i am listening on some sony headphones plugged into our mbox mini that we reluctantly bought for painful transfers such as this one... my god, some horrible sounds get put into $15000 PTHD rigs.

some talentless dude in texas did an absolutely terrible job on this.

terrible. everything sounds like it was recorded in a foam box with an mxl 990...

my poor wife has to listen to me curse with headphones on because of this assclown in texas who ruined a few perfectly good songs.

at least the songs are good and the singer has a great voice, so the only thing that i have to wrestle into submission are the terribly recorded drums and guitars. like early 90's ADAT demo studio bad...

party time.

so lets all talk about getting horrible tracks to mix!

Holy shit, John, that sucks. Please include his name.
I record, mix, and master in my Philly-based home studio, the Spacement. https://linktr.ee/ipressrecord

Is it Tad Donley?
I get satisfaction of three kinds. One is creating something, one is being paid for it and one is the feeling that I haven?t just been sitting on my ass all afternoon.

btw, i wasn't serious cos there's plenty of good engineers/recordists here.

but it seems fashionable to bash anything having to do with Texas so i was taking the piss with regards to the ppl who do that.

as for anyone who uses the phrase "flyover states" in earnest, i think i would just piss on them.

I'm pretty talentless and I use foam boxes to record in a lot...Is it me?
Of course I've had it in the ear before.....

maybe it is tad donelly...

oh no, it can't be... it was tracked on an HD2 rig... i don't think a mutt lange like tad donelly uses pros tool.

well, today i have to start trying to save this record. what is really terrible about it, is not that it is technically wrong, just sounds so bad and aesthetically wrong...
i will try to find some good examples and post them...

the best part is the songs where he sample replaced the toms, and then ERASED THE MIC TRACKS... party time.

and there are no room mics.

none.

but there is a hihat mic. YAY.

Ha!

So John, are you wishing you came from a ITB-DAW-Fix-It-In-The-Mix background for the first time in your life?

This is clearly a PT-head trying to get revenge for the recent comments you made in the mixing ITB thread.

Now you get to experience how the other half lives.

Enjoy automating the crap out of things and over-massaging sounds to try vainly to make up for the awful tracking!

Oh.

Oh, the Irony.

Good luck!

you want to come by and hear it some time justin?

i think i'm going to have to set up our '65 ludwig kit, make some samples of it with room mics, and then trigger some stuff... and then chamber it all, too to get some vibe happening.

then a lot of judicious use of transformers, inductors, and tubes....

i felt like a traitor last night, sitting in my wife's office with the studio's new mbox mini plugged into our imac trying to sort through the crap and see what was actually going on and getting it all consolidated so i can drop it in logic today and get to work...

the label that is the client fully understands that this is a salvage mission, so it is all good. i've got 2 days budgeted just for editing, sound 'helping', and overdubs on 6 songs.
