a big *ROFL* at quite possibly the dumbest mic design ever

Post by themagicmanmdt » Sun Feb 24, 2008 11:09 pm

ok, so, guys and gals here. probably mostly guys.

we've been chatting it up for a while now.

we all have a good, if not loose understanding of the idea of shapes and how sound bounces inside of them. think room construction, parallel walls, etc.

now, think of mic design.

i came across this, as i was vainly searching the pits of audio shopping: the 'clearance' section of musicians friend *shudder*.

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/ ... ku=273108X

ok. the mic is a square.

technically, what the name is: a cube, people.

now, i like MXL mics. i think i may champion the 603s and the 2001/2003 on here like some do AT's and like some do to chinese ribbons.

but this is the pits.

the person who designed this deserves a nice fresh cut lemon squirted in their eye.

yes.

rofl.

i said it.

I think a cylindrical shape would be even worse, though. Ever tried recording in a cylinder, right in the center? All sorts of weird reflections. And yet that's what many microphones are shaped like.

I know...

The md 441 is all square, almost nerdy.

So they all sound like crap, just box em up and send them to me! :D

Ill even pay shipping, cause I know they are collecting dust in all the mic lockers of the world!

Maybe we can do a group buy on some round grills for the 441s!

There's a couple great action shots over at Guitarget's site. Does she come with the mic? Does it work best in Brooklyn in a busted up warehouse area? Is that sky even real?

I suspected its backlash from all the "ball" mics.

Guitarget suggests on their site that you buy a $199 stand for this mic. Great idea.

seems to me they're going for a bit of the 414 look there, add the 1" gold sputtered action and you've got an attempt at a clone, albeit a cubic one.

Looks fine to me. I don't see anything wrong with it. Different strokes...

Just do the circle mod. It'll open it up and smooth it out.

I bet it wont roll of your desk, and crash on the floor. They should have marketed that as a design feature.

I think Paul and I like its looks because it reminds us of those old Brush mics from the forties. That's what it reminds me of anyway.

Didn't somebody on here buy a couple of those and say they were OK?

I'm not sure about that mic design and whether I'm laughing.

But I've gotta say I was LMAO at this painfully lame picture...

:shake:

That is so lame it is truly awesome...awesomely funny that is.

The lowest possible mode would be what? 4k? Could be a problem, assuming the bottom half is even open to the capsule. If not, the wire mesh doesn't constitute a barrier and would have almost 0 effect.

Wire mesh will indeed cause some reflections - I found this out the hard way when I built a large-bodied cylinder mic. With identical guts and capsule it sounded bad compared to a smaller-diameter mic.
