And CDs were supposed to get rid of groove noise, but that doesn't stop folks from using it as an "effect."

Actually, I just did a bunch of old-time folk music recording in my living room, and since it's still winter we had a number of takes where the radiator came on.

We just said, well, there's our tape hiss.

There is a plugin called Ferox that might do what you want (leave allthe settings on zero except "noise")

http://www.dancetech.com/aa_dt_new/hard ... 146&lang=0

Or Tape Delay from this site (use noise only):
http://www.interruptor.ch/vst_overview.shtml

Also ELOTTRONIX XL
http://www.uv.es/~ruizcan/p_vst.htm

If you want to spend money, there's this:

I just made a clip of tape hiss (the real thing - from an old cassette) that I'll try to post at freesound tomorrow if I have time. It's a lovely sound, like a nice worn-out wool blanket or some such.

Okay, dig: http://freesound.iua.upf.edu/samplesVie ... p?id=49005

Use it for whatever, whenever, whoever. I hope it earns you millions of shekels during your lifetime.

Why not just use tape? Get thee to a studio that has a tape machine and take selected tracks off tape...

Is the specific use of tape hiss only for vanity? As it is pitchless, it will have no musical effect and certainly will not offer harmonic saturation unless your sounds are taken off tape.

I've just talked to a studio I'm cutting drums at soon and they said they'd hook me up. I'm recording a project that is going for an Ethan Johns sound and everything we've tracked sounds good but a bit anemic without that hiss underneath it. I would love to work with tape but I don't have the money for the tape and musicians and studio time. We barely have the money for musicians and studio time so that's what we are spending it on.

Oh, I thought you wanted it as a sound effect the way people use vinyl scratches/pops in the background. Anyway, somebody will want that freesound sample sooner or later.

In that Pete Anderson interview in TapeOp, he used the term "tape rinse," i.e. do the mix in ProTools but shuttle it over to tape and then back into the computer. I guess it adds a little hiss and tape compression. Certainly you can afford and old Teac deck and a couple reels that get reused just for this purpose?

Nice Hiss!

I'm curious though to know what kind of converters you use, because it I'm not hearing any depth in it. It's a little on the harsh side. Maybe you can send it off to get mastered through a $40,000 signal chain, so as to bring it to life!!

if it's what sounds right to them then it's right.

i'm not a fan of hiss, but if the music is good enough then i'm willing to overlook it.
