Moving to a new space w/ HD, should I re-record my album?
I'm at a cross-roads. On Monday I'm moving into a new, much nicer recording space with a Pro Tools rig and other amenities and I'm trying to decide if I should re-record the majority of my girlfriend's album, which I've posted a song on the board and enlisted some help from TapeOp'ers. Everything I've done has been done in a basement like setting, and it sounds ok but I think I could take it to a different level. Here is a link to the space, the equipment list is not updated. Oh, and this isn't my HD rig, I don't want anyone to think I dropped 10s of thousands of dollars over the weekend, I'm sharing it with a couple people.

I've wasted so much time over the years re-recording stuff that it's seriously affected my ability to write new stuff...
My new philosophy is:
Do it. Release it. Move on to something new.
You always hope that your new songs will be better than your old ones... Make some better new songs on the new rig.

That's an excellent point. It would be nice to move on. In this new space, having a control room, live room, and iso booth instead of one 12x10 room will make it so much easier, that I can breeze through it. I think what I'm going to do, is continue to work on my girlfriends new album in its current state in the new space (all that needs done is vocals and electric guitar) and in a month my girlfriend will have a new batch of songs. Plus, I have my own band to worry about.

I wouldn't bother retracking it. You'll go batshit crazy. But you'll have more headroom with HD and probably (hopefully) some more and better plug-ins/outboard gear to mix with.

i'd use a Tascam Porta 02, myself.calaverasgrandes wrote:re-record it on a Fostex X-15.
but yah, move on...one of the most self-sabatoging things i ever fell into was re-recording stuff cos i suddenly had better gear available.

My initial instinct is to say "Move on. Record a new album."
However, you could justify re-tracking if you've only completed 2 or 3 songs out of 12 so far. If you're more than 60% done, then definitely finish up! Don't look back.
However, if there are many other things you're not happy with and you want to think of your already recorded material as "pre-production demos" of a true masterpiece, than go for it! Start recording from scratch.
But remember to keep things in perspective: An HD system alone won't instantly make your new recordings sound better!

it depends how good you think the songs are. And how creative your output is. If your artist can reliably re-track everything it should be much more quick process now that the definitive song is there for reference. Sometimes when I am in a creative block I will do a cover song or re-work an old tune to keep things moving.
If your writing 4 songs before breakfast each morning then I would say just write better new material and move on...
