What mics to get? (Yeah yeah, I know)
Lately I've been trying to think out what mic I want to add to the collection. Currently, the personal locker is as follows:
(1)AT40407
(1)MK-219
(2)KSM141
(2)MK-012 (the old ones)
(3) SM57
On the one hand, I know my collection is direly lacking in dynamic mics. On the other hand, it would be nice to make the 219 and 4047 pairs. Most likely, I would end up with a SM7 if I went the dynamic route. So, what would you do?

The most I'm willing to spend is the cost of another 4047, so the RE20 (which I presume you're referring to) or a 421 are potential runners.nordberg wrote:what are you looking to spend? on the cheap side i'd recommend some fat head ribbons an ev20 or a 421... depends what you need.

i'd say go for a good dynamic. a sm7 is solid and gives you a decent alternate vocal mic. great on electric guitar, hihats, drums etc... even cool on acoustic.
a 441 is even a little more versatile in my opinion and absolutely kills on snare drum. (toms, electric, bass amp, acoustic....) very smooth sounding. tight hypercardoid pattern.
421 wicked on drums / electric and some vocalists. meaty.

the new rules : there are no rules
+1. These mics rock, especially for an alternative to the LDC vocal sound.kayagum wrote:Also consider Heil mics in the dynamic dept. PR30/PR40
Get your 219 modded. It's like having a new million dollar mic.
Also, maybe try getting Red caps for the 012's, but those are hard to come by now, but I LOVE mine to death. I just did drums with them last night and I can't even believe how great they sound.

The SM7 is a great microphone to have around, works well on a lot of things, but I really want to give the PR30 a try. Suppose to be really nice in conjunction with a SM57 (combination was used a lot on the latest Against Me! record if you like that sound).
What type of music do you record?
