RE20 Wiring

Post by aaronburr » Sat Mar 15, 2008 5:29 pm

Anyone take apart an re20 and look inside? I just bought one (for cheap, because it "sounded thin", which it does) and took it apart - it seems as though it is missing parts!

I found inside:
- 1 transformer (3 wires coming in, 3 coming out)
- 1 inductor type thing?
- another inductor type thing going to ground?
- 1 resistor
- 1 capacitor

the schematic, though, shows 2 resistors, 2 caps, 2 inductors. also it only shows 4 leads in/out of the transformer, but i have 6?

are there some parts in some other spot in the mic that i cant see? im new to working on microphones so i am sorta lost. any ideas?

hahaha 53 views and no one knows!
neither do i, SO i guess ill just send in my mic to EV for repair. $50 labor + parts - not bad. probably worth it just to get the foam replaced, etc.

You might have an older model. The schematic-datasheet shows a bass cut switch. Does yours have that?

mine does have a bass cut switch. it is wired in line with the hum bucking coil like in the schematic.

but over to the right of that, that inductor, one of those resistors, and one of those caps (cant tell which one cause they dont list values) are not there. and there is another connection missing in there, too. i believe between the switch and the lead on the schem labeled green. id have to doublecheck that, though.

did the wiring change at any point in the re20's lifetime?

I don't know the history of it but I do know it's been around a very long time. They might have re-voiced it along the way since that is what the extra cap and resistor would do.
$50.00 labor plus parts is pretty tempting unless they really screw you on the parts. You might try changing the capacitor since it would be very cheap.

yeah, its tempting, but say if all the parts are there and its just wired incorrectly (looks like it might have been taken apart before i got it) then im spending $50 for them to just change out some foam and i could just fix that myself! maybe ill play with it some more and see what i can do on my own...

a few weeks later!

does anyone think it would be a bad idea to solder the re20 capsule right to the transformer and skip the circuit? i have no clue how that would sound but it seems like it would work and not damage the capsule so maybe its worth a shot...

It shouldn't hurt it. See what it sounds like.

why not cut out the transformer? do the TapeOP 57 mod to the RE20. That might be interesting.

I'd vote for sending it in...

I just replaced the foam in mine, and pulling it apart / putting it back together was trickier than I thought it would be. For $50 in labor + parts, it's pretty much worth it if you value your time at, say, $20 an hour or more. Have them replace the foam while they're in there. I think the foam cost me ~ $8 or so.
