Post by C_R_J » Tue Mar 25, 2008 9:02 am

i was curious about vocoders. i have never really used one, but i think it could be fun to abuse one. anyone got any good links on them? anyone suggest a decently priced one?

If you're considering software vocoders...I've been using CM Vocoder. It came free with Computer Music Magazine a few issues back. Its a rebadged version of the Fruity Loops Vocoder. Very tweakable, nice sounding piece of software. I've been using it through Reaper with Togu Audio Line's U-NO-60 as the carrier sound. Can't really say how it compares to the Korg or any of the hardware units out there, but it's sounds pretty good to me. You can check out a short test I did here.

cheap, and works well for me all the time: electrix warp factory.

Works really well for certain things, like taking a midi export from Waves TUNE and sending that to a midi>cv convrter and firing my modular synth through that, then through the warp factory with the formant from the lead vocal... totally crazy amazing backup singer robots that can actually sound really good even in a "non-kraftwerk" way...

I have the Electrix MoFx and Filter Factory (both great units), and have been looking at picking up the Warp Factory. I'm just waiting to see if the new version (out this year supposedly) does anything more. If not I'll pick up a used one.

I also give the thumbs up for the Electrix Warp Factory. It's a lot of fun and plus it's also cheap. It is way more fun than a software plug in and you can always use it live cause Electrix products are rock solid.

Electrix' second attempt at ressurection announced it is officially defunct again in mid February of this year and took their site down, so second hand is where it's at for that warp factory.
