Mic Pre for EV RE20

Post by hebjam » Wed Mar 26, 2008 8:03 pm

Just got an RE20 after seeing Thom Yorke using it and am going for that type of sound, Eels, Beck, Wilco. Close and 'hairy' , a bit of saturation.
What's a good pre amp ( Simple, no eq etc...)

My chain so far: EV RE20 / TL Audio Indigo Pre / LynxOne Audio Card. I also have UAD card with 1176 etc....
Will probably get A LynxTwo soon.
Thanks!!

One of my favorites is the "Five Fish" (?) SC1 ? (I'll look up a link) or True's P-Solo. Grace's 101 is another nice one there...

Pretty amazing sounding preamp... Friggin' cheap, also.

The past couple of days our RE20 has been seeing a lot of love - resonator, banjo, archtop acoustic... Through a Grace 101. Lovely.
he took a duck in the face at two and hundred fifty knots.

Umm.... I doubt it's the RE20 by itself that's getting the "close and hairy" sound. Sounds a lot more like a driven line/pre amp to me, through a color compressor. That being said, I'm sure you'll find plenty of uses for the RE20 and enjoy it. Just don't expect instant Radiohead. You may find you have other pieces of the puzzle to find.

I've seen a few posts lately (especially with Wilco- WTF?) where it goes like "I want to sound like Jeff Tweedy- I saw him use an SM7 in a video, I should get one." Now, an SM7 is a great microphone, and imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Inspiration is a great thing, but if it gets into shameless copying, it loses some of the luster. We're very quick to slam Chinese microphone companies for copying other designs... maybe we need to be quicker in slamming Wilco fans

i use an RE20 and love it TOO much...

I use it on a whole bunch of stuff- bass, kick, vocals, reamping vox through an amp, ect...

Honestly though, it doesnt always sound that great on everything... :)

Seeing Thom use it though, kinda rules...

I like putting it through a 312 though, it sounds good that way.

something Neve or Neve-ish like the Great River stuff would probably do what you want. Or API like has already been suggested.

+1 on this.

my re-20 as been used for bass cabs for years.

current fave bass set up.

re20-->api
cad-e100 (old version)--> sountracs topaz pre

both summed and then into the art vla pro or dbx 160 xt

and a DI (radial pro DI) along side for blending or reamping.

it gets used a lot on bass cabs and vocals.
