how to get that tape slowing sound digitally?

You know.. where everything grinds to a halt. This may be a well-documented topic, but I haven't seen anything on it. I'm using cubase 4, and have looked around in it, but nothing has worked yet. Do you guys ever do this, and what are your methods? Thanks!

Tape Stop simulates the effect you get when you turn off a tape recorder or a turntable with the sound still on.

There's a protools plug called VariFi that does exactly this. It's part of their old (but still active) Lo-Fi pack.

i recently got an old sony 'prosumer' reel to reel up and running after getting it 10-ish years ago and letting it gather dust in my parents' basement. i've been toying with the idea of mixing part of a track down to the tape just so i can bring it to a halt, then blend it back into the original mix, so i get a gradual blend down to tape fidelity, then BOOM, the tape stops. then maybe bring back the mix in full digital clarity again. i guess it'd be a new spin on the lo-fi intro that we had a thread about a while back.

you could use a real tape machine or an Alesis AirFX.

The Tape Stop plugin looks cool... but, it's Windows only. So, I checked out KvR and searched for a Mac alternative. I read through a thread where a guy was looking for a Mac compatible plugin to do this. There were lots of suggestions for ways to do it. Each one was met with "that's too much trouble" or "that's more steps than I'd like"... I started wondering, "how often does this guy plan to use this effect?" and "his stuff must be pretty lame"

I'm glad that I read the thread, though... I learned a lot of cool alternatives for the few times I might need an effect like this.

There's a Reaktor ensemble that does this. Bias & Speed.

but you need Reaktor.

Put the mixed file into a sampler and use the pitch bend on your keyboard to slow down the song.
