Is that the magic "whine like Thom Yorke" mic?

What if that is the only mic you can safely use on him, under any circumstances? I'm imagining that the band's management comes in to the session and says to the producer, "The last guy who recorded us said to give you this" and hands over a scrap of paper. On it, scrawled in dried blood, are the words, "FOR THE LOVE OF CHRIST, USE AN RE-20!" The producer thinks its some kind of lame prank and picks out the mic that he likes for the application and waits for Mr. Yorke to get done with his mid-day bout of coke and hooker-sex. And then The Hell begins. Every single mic in the locker just accentuates the keening, harpy-esque quality of Thommy-boy's pipes. The assistant, tired of getting his hair parted by what's coming through the monitors, looks imploringly at producer and asks, "Should I go ahead and get the..." only to be cut short by an angry glare. The producer is Captain Ahab and this session is his white whale and he doesn't care who goes down with the ship. But alas, when even the old trusty SM7 doesn't get it done, the beaten producer looks up from his desk and whispers "Get...the...Electrovoice..." And then, reaching up, uses the blood flowing out of his ear canals to write a note to the next, poor soul who will be subject to this vocal damnation: USE AN RE-20!

Nice vignette! That line was the icing on the cake...

You know what the RE-20 is nicknamed, right?

It looks just like a Telefunken U47?

I kinda thought this nonsense was coming...as soon as I saw those webcasts Radiohead did a few months ago I thought, wow, I'm glad I already got my RE20s.

My favorite RE20 pic is actually in the LP sleeve for "Kenny Loggins Alive" --there's an RE20 on the drumset and the way the shot is framed it looks like it's about four times its actual size.

At MTSU, we referred to it as "the doorstop". ***as I step into my flame-retardant suit***

I don't know what they've used on the past few records, but my guess is it's still a U47. I realize he's singing into an RE-20 in the video, and he may very well have used it on the record, but it's likely it was just used for the video performance.

OK Computer was a U47 and Rode Classic. http://www.nigelgodrich.com/press3.htm
