Andy Johns: Photo-Essay For Miking Drums

Post by akg414 » Fri Apr 11, 2008 8:30 am

Not sure if this was posted already, but a very interesting series of photos showing Andy's mic placement for recording drums.

There are about 9 pages of photos.

Joe Barresi has some pix too from this site.

Enjoy...

Good stuff! Thanks for the pictures. Man, you guys were using a TON of mics. It always surprises me when I see so many mics on one kit, every drum double-mic'd, individual crashes mic'd. I'd hate to be mixing it!

Thanks again for the pictures!

i feel like the only reason he is putting so many mics on the drums there is because its for a samples collection?

although i dont know much about andy johns, so unless he is some sort of anti-glyn johns then i bet thats just for the samples thing.

Maybe not every other great record. Maybe every fourth one. You have to account for other hacks like Eddie Kramer and then the really talented guys like his older brother and Tom Dowd.

I'll give him some credit-- the Woodstock record sounds pretty good, given the circumstances. Other than that, I've said it before and I'll say it again: the guy was there for some great records that had NOTHING to do with him being there aside from a stiff finger being able to hit "record." Jimi Hendrix could have made any of his records with two kindergarteners holding two Dixie cups and Piece of string and they would have been equally as cool as anything Eddie Kramer did. Maybe even better.

Tom Dowd and Glyn Johns? Engineering Gods! hard to compare anything when those two guys were making records at the same time.

Are you kidding? Listen to 'Electric Ladyland' and then understand how people were working at the time. Like Geoff Emerick, Kramer was pushing the medium to it's limits.

I love Ladyland, but definitely not for its sound. In fact, I think I love Ladyland despite its signature.

Tastes, as far as "the sound" or "the sonic signature" change every few years. If you make a ground breaking, great sounding record today, your technique will be copied by many, improved upon by some & become cliche'd in just a few years. Electric Ladyland sounded like it came from outer space when it was fresh & new....so alien & different! It still inspires me to this day. Give me the chance to record a Hendrix or a Beatles & you can rag on my style all you want, but I will still be the guy who did it!

Listen to Magical Mystery Tour. When you hear the hack engineering on one particular track, look down at the credits and there will be Eddie Kramers name.

It seems Andy (like Geoff Emerick) has forgotten how he used to record records.
Don't hire these guys thinking they will use classic techniques. They are desperately trying to be "current" and losing the battle.
BTW. Those pictures look a bit like Sound City's control room.
