Question about RNC preamp and being unbalanced

Post by jckinnick » Wed Apr 16, 2008 3:40 pm

Im coming out of my RNC into a Summit 2ba-221 preamp. The Summit has balanced inputs. If I run a TS-TRS 1/4 cable out of the RNC and into the Summit will the RNC still work or do i have to unbalance the Summit as well.

The term 'balancing' really only applies to the input and the outputs of the device - not the actual device itself. so, if one end is unbalanced, that run of cable between the two would be unbalanced.

unless you experience some kind of issue with +4/-10 level mismatch, you should be fine simply hooking the two together, being mindful of your hot pin and your ground pin.

So this wont make my Summit unbalanced even though it has balanced inputs?

Since you're running the compressor before the preamp, I'd say whether the RNC is balanced or unbalanced is the least of your worries.

try putting the pre before the compressor.

Ok I put the RNC coming out of the insert on the pre and apparently only the input on the RNC has to be unbalanced.

the ins and outs of the RNC are both unbalanced.

stick one side of the RNC in the pres insert (send AND return) and you're golden.

the output of the pre is balanced.
