Why build a home recording studio?

I'm curious, everyone. Why would you or did you build a home recording studio? What are your motivators?

Because I like recording a LOT more than having a Bass Boat.

+1

There is nothing better than having a song idea pop into your head, and being able to just run down stairs to the studio and hash it out.

It's also a great way to "demo" ideas and arrangements before going to a great sounding room to record them.

so I can mix stuff I recorded elsewhere, without having to leave my house, and own the competition in my price bracket.

Mainly because no place else I can mix at for free has the space for my monitors. :( and I won't deem something a final mix until I hear it through them.

I'd never record in my apt though. all I need for mixing is a computer and good monitoring. recording requires so much more..

because I'm too crabby to move my ass to someone else's place and then see them wrap their cables all wrong.

Ummm, let's see. Because I don't want to haul a couple hundred pounds of gear out to the studio where I work, which, while gorgeous, isn't designed to be operated by an artist as he performs? Because I've discovered the secret of the shoemaker's children* as it pertains to being a recording engineer? :D

Because I'm a total gear junkie. That pretty much wraps it up.

So I can do my own sound design work. And experiment.

I built mine because I wanted to record and I knew there was a niche I could fill but I didn't want the pressure of having to pay rent or make money.
It may be a garage, but it doesn't sound like one.

I got a 4-track since I was 16. All I ever wanted to do was make rock records.
