"Kick drum" mics... bleh.

I like the 52 and dislike the d112. The d112 sounds like a basketball on most kick drums to me. I like a 91 inside, a 52 in the hole and then I build a "kick drum tube" and put a AT 4050 at the end of it. I do a lotta live sound and recording so I guess Ive really just gotten used to the 52/91 combo. I also like Sennheisers version on the same thing and a M88 or a 421 wont steer you wrong. I think it mainly depends on the kick drum and type of music youre trying to record or mix live. A 52 is also versitile, even though I do agree it sounds a bit "manufactured." It is easy with a 52 to make any kick drum sound halfway decent in a pinch and this has saved my ass many times. I guess I do more hard rock/metal/ and death metal too so the hyped high end is my friend. A lot of time for slower music Ill cut that 52 hyped high attack drastically. bla

The next time I record kick, I'm going to stick an EV-635a in there and see how it sounds.
