Web Hosting Question

Post by liftyrfists » Fri Apr 25, 2008 6:04 pm

Hello,
Ok, about to put up a simple website for a small record label and will need to host it somewhere. Any recommendations? I've heard godaddy is good, but just wanted to get a second opinion...or third/fourth/eighteenth opinions are even better!

cheers,
jon

I would not recommend godaddy. I have used godaddy, registerfly, and 1and1.com

I had downtime with both godaddy & registerfly. In fact registerfly was so bad there was at one point a lawsuit against them. (Not by me)

I have used a basic linux package on 1and1 for about 7 years now and havent had a single instance of down time. I have never used thier website designer but i know one comes with it.

One thing that bothers me about 1and1 is that back when i started using them, i could call and get an easy to understand person in about 5 minutes, last time i called with a question it took about 10 minutes and the person could barely speak any english.

BUT with that said they were friendly and helpful.

Good luck! If you need any other hosting or setup advice let me know.

Cheers!

I like Godaddy for the name registration and use www.sitelutions.com for the hosting.

Very good service and price.

i would stay clear of hostgator. their employees throw shit around their offices, and discuss content of clients' space in IRC. no thanks.

I've had a lot of nightmares dealing with GoDaddy for clients.

I don't know about hosting, but I've never found a better domain registry than EasyDNS.com. Their system works really well, updates are very fast, DNS hosting is top-notch, and when you call for support a Canadian answers the phone fairly quickly and fixes your problem right away.

My http://www.radiationroom.com website is currently parked on a Cline Communications http://www.clinecommications.com server but I do NOT recommend their service because it is difficult to get through to customer support. But they are CHEAP, hosting my website for $36-USD a year for a 15MB account which is more than enough to host articles and a few graphics.

In the years past I have had accounts with IX Webhosting and Cloud 9 Internet. I have mixed feelings about IX Webhosting because of their policies concerning domain names - IE: They want to own/control your domain name. Cloud 9 Internet has/had fantastic service but they are/were EXPENSIVE. Then again you get what you pay for.

As for my DNS, my domain name is registered with Enom (formerly Bulk Register) and there has never been a hitch with them.

Formerly I had domains registered with Network Solutions and their customer support was a pain in various body parts. Plus expensive for what the service offered.
