help with Garageband?

Post by Tragabigzanda » Mon May 05, 2008 7:45 am

So I went out to Sear Sound, interviewed TJ Doherty, and now the microcassette tapes sound terrible (much worse than when I did a sound check in my living room). All the speech is real low and muddy, so I'm thinking I'll just dump it all into Garageband and clean it up. But I'm not really familiar with garageband--what features does it have that are helpful to me right now?

That's a tough one -- Garageband has its own basic effects, but it also comes with a bunch of pretty useful Audio Units (high and low-shelf filters, bandpass filter, graphic and parametric EQs, and so on), and I think that's where I would start.

They keep those extra Audio Units kind of hidden in the program, probably because they want to preserve the user experience for people who are just dabbling.

What tools you use to fix your recording would depend on what's up with the source tape -- if you can explain how it sounds in more detail, what's wrong with it, I'm sure there are folks around here that can give you better advice than I can.

Speaking of Garbage...I'd record Shirley Manson for free, 24/7.

If anyone sees her, please let her know.

Yea, I tooled around with it for 15 minutes or so, and was able to clean everything up a bit. Not a bad little program (considering it's free with all macs), and it looks like it's got some tools that might be useful for demoing ideas. But it'll never beat my Tascam 4 track...
