M88 + Altec 1612B = Holy Crap!

Post by A.David.MacKinnon » Tue May 06, 2008 7:20 pm

I've been working on vocals for my own record. I'm one of those people that almost can't stand the sound of their own voice. As a result I've been running through every mic, pre, guitar amp, stomp box, etc, etc in an effort to find the best sound I can manage.
Anyway..............I'm working on a song that has a quiet vocal that's low in my register. After running through all my usual signal chains I ended up using an M88 into my Altec 1612B preamp/limiter. I've had the 1612 for quite a while but I've used the line input to crush things in the mix. This is the first time I've always used it as a pre/limiter. Holy Jesus! it's the best! My voice sounds huge. That never happens!
Anyway, that's it. I just wanted to share my holy shit moment.

I love those moments. My first one was Oktava 012's on toms.

HOLY CRAP.

I fear I'll never find a mystical combo for my voice. :)
I get satisfaction of three kinds. One is creating something, one is being paid for it and one is the feeling that I haven?t just been sitting on my ass all afternoon.

What is this... the semi-annual "dramatically lit guitar players who love m88s " convention? :)

Thanks!
I'm a late blooming singer - didn't start tii I was in my late 20's - and I've had an ongoing battle with thin sound and sibilance ever since. I'm sure no one else hears it that way I do but sometimes I listen to recordings of myself and all I can hear is SSSSSSSS.

M88's are the shit! I got mine back from repair after it was out of commission for almost a year, and have been using it on "man rock vocal" a lot recently. It really cuts through... but in the midrange, not in the treble (treble, yuck!)

Actually I did the trebliest mix ever today. I feel kind of bad about it. I'm gonna start another thread.

not sure, but she looks distressingly like my youngest sister-in-law.
