Post by JohnDavisNYC » Thu May 15, 2008 11:08 am

man, I am working on a stinky piece of 2" right now. Anyone else get a reel that smells like a Meth lab?

haha, yeah. I got two reels of 1-in from them and opened the first one the other day. Very chemical-stinky.

it is just a super stinky batch. one reel smells fine, normal oilfield warzone smell, and then the other is just pure methlab. stinks up the whole studio. isn't shedding, and sounds great, just smells terrible.

i hope comes up with a "room odoriser" similar to new car smell except for studios.

i guess we know the first two scents will be Oilfield Warzone and Meth Lab!

nominees for the rest of the line?

I just got a box of RMGI 900 that exudes that classic rust smell. That's when I know it's the right stuff.

I should get some of that ATR stuff though- maybe it smells 'El Marko' good!

I havent used that stuff yet,
Because I bought so much quantegy before they closed...
I felt the same way when GP9 first came out. I thought it smelled like someone farted after eating 100 shower curtains and a quarter panel from an old dodge truck...
Especially when you would library wind it on to the take up reel for the first time.

The latest reel I used had a firm yet balanced bouquet, slightly fruit-forward with hints of blackberry and oak.

Actually, it did smell a little weird, but probably no weirder than Quantegy or EMTEC would to someone who doesn't handle tape a lot. I love the sound, so I'm already developing a positive pavlovian response to the new aroma.

Had a batch of two reels that smelled identical - like a meth lab. We kept the door to the machine room closed so it wasn't too bad, but every time I had to go to change the reel or splice in some leader it felt like I was getting high. Also, terrible print through. Total bummer.
