BLA modded 002 mix samples

Post by Kyle » Tue May 27, 2008 11:50 am

Hello

I was wondering if anyone has a song that was mixed and bounced on the standard 002 and version of that same mix bounced with the BLA modded 002? Did you hear a difference?

If so would you be willing to share them? It would be cool to A/B these two. I've heard samples of tracking with the BLA 002 but I understand that mixes can benefit from the new clock. Any opinions on this? I'd love to hear them.

I'd also be willing to work out some kind of compensation if one of you modded folks could bounce one of my mixes through your 002 for me to compare.

Thanks
Kyle

If I ever send mine in, I will do this for you.

I'm more likely to upgrade to 003, keep things stock so I can stay in the Digi upgrade "gravy train"

Kyle,

I'm pretty sure that the BLA mods are mainly intended to improve the input signal path (preamps, clock, A/D converters) and will have little or no effect on the sound of a mix or bounce unless the two mixes were recorded differently. What you want to hear is a track that was recorded with an unmodded 002 and then a similar track recorded with a modded 002.

When mixing and bouncing is all ITB, changing the interface won't make a difference.

Only OTB mixes are affected by the clock and/or converters. The only thing that changes with a clock upgrade when doing ITB mixes is the quality of your monitoring. The sound quality of the mix itself will be unaffected.

Thanks for the replies.

I ended up scheduling an upgrade and I'm pretty excited to have this done. I'm already using he 002 everyday so I figured I should go for it. The end of July is SO far away.

I'd swear that when I got my 002 back my mixes, recorded before the mod, sounded better. Makes sense that I was hearing a monitoring improvement. I only had the super basic mod, before they had all this other Tweak Head and HD bidness.

Hey Kyle,

I had mine modded a while back. It is a night and day difference, especially with higher track counts. Clearer, more definition, less mud. Clients that had tracked with me for a few years really noticed the change in clarity.

The clock and analog path mods were huge, plus I hear they do the power supply now as well, which would be yet another improvement.

The mic pres, not so much. Better, but still not stellar.

They have my vote. Good bang for the buck.
