POLL: How do you PROFITABLY use your HOME studio?

Post by Fieryjack » Thu Jun 05, 2008 7:16 pm

Hi gang....I am interested to find out how everyone is using their HOME studios FOR PROFIT. Hopefully one of the categories below applies to you.......please choose which one is MOST relevant to your HOME studio--and check the "I don't really record for profit' if that applies too (be honest!!)

Obviously I'm looking for responses for users who are actually recording "in a house"

Thanks!! :)

not sure I can check just one, let me think. Out of my home studio, I do:

--theatre sound design and music composition
--local music demos and albums
--sound design/video editing for dancers and dance troupes
--sound design/mixing for cartoons
--sound effects for resale
--music composition/video editing & production/DVD authoring for local businesses and authors

It's not actually a house, it's an apartment. Hope that counts.

What the hell is a profit? My place serves as a money pit....I do demo stuff mostly and occasionally I charge people but since it's not my sole means of support I don't sweat no profit status much. It would be nice though.
Of course I've had it in the ear before.....

Theater sound design and composing (like dwlb)

Audio restoration (from old tapes, bad recordings)

Location recordings (primarily vocal groups- I have a few friends who sing professionally)

Hopefully get some independent music project going, although you did say profit, right?

How come there is no "My home studio is shamefully neglected and sitting unused" option?

my option isn't up there either.

i primarily use my home recording setup to record myself and my band, and it's profitable because it makes the overhead for putting out music a lot lower. we're putting out a cd later this month, and breaking even/making money off of it is actually a probability, mostly because our overhead was relatively low.

I do depreciate my equipment for tax purposes as part of my second job as a musician. Those losses are as close as I come to profits -- other than the immeasurable joy I bring my neighbors.

Wish I put 'mastering' on there.

Anyone else making any money in their home studios or is it mostly hobby-oriented, etc.? What kind of niche work are you getting?

Thks

I had to dig out my Oxford dictionary and look up "profit". I'll have to admit, it seems like a great idea...

I really set up the studio for myself and my band. However, through word of mouth I keep getting people who want to record so I am very happy about that. Anyway mostly bands and artists; a few demos, a bunch of full length albums and the occasional location recording. Since its just a side thing, any money goes back into more gear - no "profit" per se but if I ever get crazy enough to open a "commercial" place I will be ready to roll.

My home studio isn't "for profit" per se....but it sort of is profitable with the way I work. I primarily record the bulk of my own records there and have them mixed elsewhere. This is actually "profitable" in that I am free to delve in and experiment without paying elsewhere.

I do a small amount of helping friends out with demos and overdubs but not enough to really be "profitable".

On another note, I have a friend who does some voice over work at his home studio....small budget audio book type stuff.....boring but easy work if you can find it.

I'm doing some cassette transfer work this summer. Did it last summer too. I'll make about 2 grand for it. Not bad.

How do you calculate a rate for this kind of work? What do you charge? Been thinking of offering this kind of service since the only duplication company in town is now defunct.
