Abbey Road Brilliance Pack

Post by Jewish Guitar Hero » Tue Jul 01, 2008 11:36 am

Does anyone have any experience of using the abbey road brilliance pack?

i read in 'recording the beatles' that the EMI RS127 was used extensively all over many beatles records, and also that one of the EMI mix engineers used it on nearly every disc he cut.
i hope this doesn't sound like a total noob question, but if the original unit was basically a passive frequency boost, do these plugins sound that much different from the eq in Logic?
Thanks

I am finding most every plug in never sounds like the actual gear. That's my 2 cents on plug ins. Maybe it didnt answer your question but I would say a plug in is not going to get you near an emi.

You can do a free demo for the plug-ins, that should tell you exactly how they sound.

In that case, I'll try and download the demo tonight or tomorrow and see how it sounds against the Logic eq's... I'll try and post my findings this weekend.

just out of curiosity, which specific plugin emulations have failed to live up to your experience using the real thing?

I have to agree on the plug ins not sounding like the real thing. I mean of course none of LA2a and 1176 clones really nail it. But I use 1176-ish plugs all the time.
The digital ones sound very good, but analog eqs and compressors smear and distort in nice ways that I have never heard anything digital do.

I've been reading the 11 page thread about these over at 'that other' forum, ahem...
Anyway, the verdict is out and from what I can gather......they sound absolutely wonderful but not very versatile, although extremely usable and pleasant on just about every source imaginable. By 'not very versatile' I essentially mean, not the go-to eq when surgical notching/boosting is in order. So, 11 pages worth of gushing enthusiasm over the Brilliance Pack with maybe 3 or 4 indifferent reviews, at most. Pretty impressive. Of course, to each his own, I don't own any 3rd party bundles of eq/comps, and now investigating which to get. I think the Waves SSL pack is a sure thing, but I must say, the Abbey Road BP is not to be dismissed, and admittedly, they are on my list of 'when i have the spare $249, I'm in"

On a final note, I have an iLok, have had it for about 4 years and haven't used it in about 3, because quite frankly, I f***ing hate it, but alas, for some quality plugs, it will rise like the phoenix from the ashes, it's all going iLok now anyway, poo.
