MXR-80 D.I. box vs direct out of my SWR

Post by Grahambo! » Thu Jul 03, 2008 9:31 am

I've heard great things about the Sansamp Bass DI and the MXR Bass DI.

Right now I just plug an XLR out the back of my SWR 4004 head and into my firestudio. Sounds ok, but usually pretty plain, especially since the direct out on my SWR bypasses the EQ.

Would a MXR Bass DI (cheaper than sansamp, so I'll probably get that one) improve my tone for DI purposes, or hell, even if I used it in my chain (e.g. Bass -> Effects -> DI box -> SWR input -> Direct out to Firestudio)??

It would give you a lot of tonal variety so I'd say definately worth trying out. Just buy it from a place that you can take it back if you don't like it.

I have the Sansamp BDDI and would highly recommend it as a di by itself or as a stompbox in front of an amp.

In my experience the DI on SWR amps is the worst sound possible for anything ever.

I would try to get a good amp tone and combine it with something like the MXR.

But I would avoid the SWR direct out like the plague. Get a DI with XLR output and run it like this:

Bass--> FX --> DI --> (1/4") --> Bass amp miced - (XLR) --> firestudio
Everything louder than everything else.
