could this damage my amp?

Post by Spindrift » Thu Jul 03, 2008 3:44 pm

I have a 90's SS tweed Fender Bronco. It has it's limitations, but the overdrive channel would be really sweet as a pedal into my Vibrolux or AC-15. Unfortunately, the only output jacks are headphone and 8 ohm external speaker.

I just came across this and wondered if it would work well:

My concern is, since using an external speaker with this amp cuts the sound to the internal 8" speaker, do I risk damaging the amp due to this circuit not providing a proper load?

Thanks
Adam

If your Bronco is solid state, you should be able to unplug the speaker and play all day with no harm to the amp. You could even try just plugging the bronco right into the AC15 without adding any resistors. Just use the master volume to get it to the right level.

no, having an unmatched load just results in less power transfer, but as such is not harmful to your source.

Is this the same with stereo amplifiers? I remember when I was young, my dad telling me not to turn the SS receiver on unless the speakers were hooked up.

Thanks for the responses.

No, there is no harm at all. Your dad was probably thinking you might plug in the speaker while the receiver is on, and cause damage to the speakers because of clicks and pops.
