cascade pre's for more gain on cascade fathead

Post by randrohe » Mon Jul 14, 2008 4:38 am

Hello all,
I will be receiving a fathead ribbon soon. The preamps I have available are a motu ultralite and 8pre, both w/ 60db of gain, a digimax fs w/ 55 db of gain, and a studio projects vtb.
From what I have read, I am going to need more gain/higher impedence than any of these offer..
Is it possible or advisable to run one pre into another? I see the Rode powerplug offers +20 gain, but are 100$ a pop. Any thoughts?
Yes, I am quite new to all of this. Thanks for your thoughts,RANd

I have no issues with cascading 2 mic pres together, but I have found that the makeup gain on a decent compressor supplements a pre-amp nicely if the pre-amp runs out of gain on a particular low source. Usually anywhere from 6db to 12db of usuable gain depending on the compressor model.
They mostly come at night..... Mostly.

55 to 60 I've found is plenty of gain for a Fathead unless it's just a terribly quiet source... you should be in good shape with what you've got.

you may cut some vocals that need 70ish dB and the line amp in any of your comps should be fine for the difference. The various little 20 dB inline booster pre's being marketed have poor noise specs, and are best avoided for this purpose; do it after the main preamp with a line amp.
