DBX 3BX III

How do you use it it? I was reading how people have hooked it up for there vinyl but I can not seem to get it to work right. I tried posting and emailing on other sites, because this may be more of an audiophile stereo gear thing but no one has gotten back to me.

It's not as simple as just plugging the record player into the in's and then out into the receiver? It passes signal to the receiver when I put the 3bx on bypass but when I choose preamp, there is no signal.
