The one that comes with an XP install disc.

Seriously. I have had nothing but trouble with the last --I dunno-- 5 Vista machines I've tried to work with. Crappiest OS since the Atari 2600.

The drivers will not work for the mbox 2 on vista.

It even says so on the digidesign website.

I can not find any interface that provides drivers for vista.

I fucking hate it, but you can not downgrade to xp on 90 percent of new laptops.

Ugghh, 'tis pretty true. My wife and I bought a laptop for her salon and it came with Vista. It has been a total pain in the ass- after sleeping it can't find peripherals, shit crashes, etc. My least favorite thing may actually be the revamped menus (especially in the new version of Office) where I can't find a damn thing. I wanted to put XP on the thing, but finding the drivers for everything proved impossible. Not audio related, but still, it's so frustrating when you are forced to buy an operating system that isn't ready for prime time.

Luckily the crappy laptop I bought with crappy Vista on it ended up having some dudes figure out some old drivers that would make it work on XP. It also works perfectly in Linux, but I haven't tried that out with my interface yet.

Holy crap! We bought a Toshiba and it crapped out after 36 days! Goddamn Best Buy gave me 0 satisfaction, and we had to wait 40 days for BB/Toshiba to fix it. They had to replace the motherboard. Fingers crossed that the damn thing gets stable.

Get the heck out of Vista. Really. If you insist (as I do) on using Windows, do yourself a favor and find some version of TinyXP that you like. It won't cost you a dime.

While it is generally harmless, I would watch out downloading things like TinyXP or "Performance Edition"s. You never know who is harvesting your IP address or what stupid junk the 15 year old installed into it. It is very easy to use nLite and your existing XP disc to do the same thing. It practically walks you through step-by-step. Then you can use a site like blackviper to adjust all the services you need or don't need. It is all pretty harmless if you use common sense.
I had to get good at nLite because XP doesn't even see my laptop harddrive if I try to install it, so I had to slipstream drivers into the install.
