SDC Pair for under $300?

Post by thieves » Fri Aug 08, 2008 1:07 pm

Hi, all...

I finally want to add a pair of SDC's to my humble mic selection, but I really don't want to break the bank. If I had any sort of budget I'd love a pair of SM81's, but that's not in the cards. I read some good things about the AKG perception 150 pair that was on MF, but they've disontinuted that deal:

I was also looking at the AKG perception 170, which seems to be similar and a step up:

some others i've been looking at...

Audix Fusion 15
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/ ... sku=270282

M-Audio Pulsar II
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/ ... sku=271505

Anyone have any experience with these, or something else I could consider that would in the $2-300 range for a pair? I really can't go much higher than $300 at this time though.

I'd mostly be using these as drum overheads, but i might also use them as room mics and acoustic instrument mics from time to time.

You could probably find two Oktava 012's used for under $300. AT Pro 37's would be a good choice, too.

Fullcompass has some at3031 selling for $144 each. That's probably the way I'd go for the budget.

I found an SM81 in good condition used for $175, and bought it.

find two, that would only be $50 over your budget, but I think worth it.

I wouldn't go any lower than this, or else you get into mxlville, and will-sell-in-six-months-for-a-real-micville

012s are sexy too, but I prefer the 81s, for some crazy reason.

to get a pair for 300$ you'll most likely have to get them used, either on ebay, or occasionally on the b/s/t section of this board.

none of the "major" online retailers sell them. i think recording services sell them online, but the price will be probably be higher than you're looking for (just google oktava and recording services.)

i've just gotten too much grief from trying to buy/sell anything of any value on ebay, it's just such a cesspool nowadays.

what's the deal with oktava's poor distribution? i got my LDC from guitar center like 8 years ago

I've had no issues, and have probably spent upwards of 2000$ in the last 6 months. Of course, if you're not comfortable with it, that's your call.

I think Oktava and GC had a falling out a few years back, since then, they haven't been available in any of those types of places.

I am surprised.

In this budget, you could get some amazing stuff.

All it takes is a little looking into someone's feedback.
